Julie’s Bicycle

Julie’s Bicycle is a charity founded by the music industry in 2007 and now working across the arts and culture. Their mission is to make environmental sustainability intrinsic to the creative industries.

Currently working in the UK and internationally, they offer tools, resources and consultancy to help the cultural community respond to environmental challenges and opportunities ranging from climate change mitigation to modelling a cultural economy on sustainable principles. Julie’s Bicycle are proactive, inspirational and effective, consisting  of 13 full timers and 10 associates who combine arts, culture, scientific and environmental expertise to be at the heart of the cultural response to environmental sustainability.

• Julie’s Bicycle offers a free online IG Tools to monitor your environmental impacts easily. Designed and developed by experts shaped specifically for the creative industries.

• Consultancy packages are available on all aspects of greening, from saving money through energy efficiency to achieving Industry Green Certification.

• Free online resources are available from their website including tools, standards, guidance and information on networks for free from our Resources section.

• Supporting the growth of networks and communities Julie’s Bicycle run a busy online and physical events programme.

• A wide range of programmes take place annually to support the sector, researching and developing industry-wide responses and initiatives to specific themes. Themes include: sustainable production and circular economics, environmental benchmarks, digital opportunities to develop sustainable cultural practices, alongside general environmental literacy and skills.

Julie’s Bicycle are now working with Arts Council England as a strategic partner to deliver on their commitment to make environmental reporting a funding requirement for all major National Portfolio Organisations (NPO’s) and Major Museum Partnerships (MPM’s).

Alison Tickell

Alison established Julie’s Bicycle in 2007 as a non-profit company helping the music industry reduce its environmental impacts and develop new thinking in tune with global environmental challenges. Julie’s Bicycle has since extended its remit to many other art forms and is acknowledged as the leading organization bridging sustainability with the arts and culture.

Trained as a cellist, Alison worked with seminal jazz improviser and teacher . She worked for many years with socially excluded young people as Development Director at Community Music, and then at Creative and Cultural Skills where she established the National Skills Academy for the music industry. She is a school governor, a 2011 London Leader, advisor to Tonic, a judge on the Observer Ethical Awards and the Royal College of Arts Sustainable Design Awards, and a fellow of the RSA.
