BRE Centre for Resilience

The recent climate change related extreme weather events experienced in the UK and around the world have wreaked havoc on our buildings and infrastructure making the need to factor resilience into our built environment an imperative.  The BRE Centre for Resilience was created this year to identify the critical issues that need to be addressed as we develop and improve the homes, buildings and structures that underpin our lives into the future.

Its mission is to provide a place for the sector to research, learn, develop new standards and create the next generation of resilient materials, products, designs and innovations that will ensure the robustness and longevity of our built infrastructure.

But resilience also encompasses our built infrastructure’s ability to withstand security and cyber threats, fire risks, natural disasters and the societal unrest that arises from increasingly dense urban developments. As the global population grows apace these issues become even more critical to address and this is the long term goal of the centre.

The BRE Centre for Resilience is a national and ultimately global resource that will be placed at the disposal of government, local authorities, environment agencies, industry and the public in a number of ways.

BRE is seeking to:

Conduct research into new mitigation and adaption methods

Create new standards for design, planning and products

Test, trial, demonstrate and certify a new tranche of innovations

Develop new training programmes for the sector

Communicate and disseminate knowledge.
